I’m Elaine Meyer, a writer and editor. My newsletter, “Return to Abnormal” will share ideas and foster discussion on what life should look like post-pandemic. Subscribe to get full access to the newsletter and website.

The phrase “return to normal” has been used frequently to refer to resuming our pre-pandemic existence. But our society faces challenges that may make normal elusive, like climate change, future pandemics, enormous inequality. Further, for many of us normal wasn’t working even before Covid — our lives were too infused by the values of capitalism alone while lacking in other areas like spirituality and community. Still, change is hard, and there are always tradeoffs to consider.

As a writer who covers work and health issues, I’ll share what I learn from my writing, reading and art, and experience from working in a variety of industries and living abroad to talk about my own changing approach to how I live and view the world (from overextended and outcome oriented to more minimalistic, thoughtful and appreciative of process). I hope to share promising ideas related to these values about the future of work (e.g. the 4-day work weekuniversal basic income) community (e.g. social media reform), how we consume (e.g. post-growth economies) and more. If you’re interested in thinking with me about how we might make things (even a little) better in a way that’s optimistic and realistic, subscribe.
